What is a fracture?
A fracture is a break or crack in the bone. Although we commonly think of fractures involving a leg, it is also possible to fracture the jaw, skull, ribs, pelvis, spine and digits. At MVS, we consider most fractures an orthopedic emergency. Waiting days, weeks or months to repair a fracture can limit our options, and greatly reduce your pet's chances of a full and speedy recovery.
How are fractures treated?
After ensuring that the patient is stable and does not have additional injuries, most fractures require a surgical repair. The type of repair greatly depends on the type of fracture and its duration, location and whether or not multiple pieces of bone are involved. Most surgical fractures are repaired using metal plates, rods and screws, while some fractures require an external fixator. Our surgeon will choose a treatment method based on what is best for your pet's condition. MVS has the equipment and expertise to perform all kinds of repair methods including interlocking nail, bone plates (including locking plate techniques), and external fixation.
