What is joint aspiration?
This diagnostic test involves the sampling of the fluid from the joint space ("joint tap") via needle aspiration while the patient is under heavy sedation or general anesthesia. This test is frequently performed in canine patients that present for fever of unknown origin (FUO). Diseases that are frequently diagnosed with this diagnostic tool include:
- Autoimmune polyarthritis
- Septic arthritis
- Degenerative joint disease (DJD)
