|
What is echocardiography?
This non-invasive test involves ultrasound of the heart. With this diagnostic tool, we can evaluate for diseases involving the heart valves, the myocardium (heart muscles), and the pericardium (the heart sac). The most common cardiac diseases of cats and dogs that we routinely diagnose and monitor with echocardiography include (but are not limited to) the following:
- Feline cardiomyopathy (hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, restrictive/unclassified cardiomyopathy, dilated cardiomyopathy)
- Dilated cardiomyopathy of dogs (especially of Doberman Pinschers and Boxers)
- Mitral valve myxomatous nodular degeneration and insufficiency of small breed dogs
- Pericardial effusion in dogs of all breeds, including secondary to cancer of the heart
- Congenital heart diseases of kittens and puppies, including pulmonic/aortic stenosis, PDA (patent ductus arteriosus), and ventricular septal defect
