What is colonoscopy?
This diagnostic test allows visualization of the inside of a pet’s colon using a long, flexible camera. Using this camera, we can obtain samples (biopsies) and look for tumors or polyps. The procedure is performed under anesthesia and requires several days of preparation. Colonoscopy may be recommended for pets who are experiencing diarrhea or are straining to defecate. In addition to helping to diagnose many types of colonic diseases, this procedure can be used to treat rectal strictures. Conditions commonly diagnosed with colonoscopy include:
- Tumors of the colon or rectum
- Inflammatory bowel disease/Colitis
- Rectal stricture
- Lymphoma
