Memphis Veterinary Imaging

Memphis Veterinary Specialists offers the only on-site veterinary computed tomography scanner (CT Scan or “CAT Scan”) in Western Tennessee. This tool enables our veterinarians to view different parts of the body with greater detail than provided by ultrasound or conventional x-ray. CT scanning works by sending very fine x-ray beams through the body to detectors, which then send the signals to a computer for processing. The computer then composites the information, one “slice” at a time, into an image that can be examined by our radiology specialists. CT scans provide better differentiation of soft tissues than traditional x-ray, because the contrast can be controlled by the technician. To provide even greater detail, a contrast dye can be injected into the patient’s bloodstream.

This non-invasive, painless procedure is invaluable for a variety of diagnostic and other purposes. For example, our surgeons frequently use CT scanning technology to help plan surgical approaches and procedures. CT scanning is particularly useful in diagnosing diseases of the nasal cavity, middle/inner ear, brain, and spinal cord, as well as certain conditions of the bones and joints.

CT examinations of the chest and abdomen are extremely valuable for detecting cancer or determining treatment plans for complex cases. A CT scan can detect the formation of a tumor long before it is noticeable by physical examination or x-ray. If a tumor is found, its location can be pinpointed for later examination, biopsy or removal.

This technology is typically only available in human medical facilities, and at university veterinary teaching hospitals. Memphis Veterinary Specialists’ CT scanner is a valuable resource for Memphis area veterinarians. If your veterinarian has suggested the need for diagnostic imaging, ask him if Memphis Veterinary Specialists may be a good choice for the task.
